What is a Doula?2018-07-06T03:12:10+00:00

A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a person before, during and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest and most satisfying experience possible.

What if I have a Cesarean birth ( elective or non-elective)?2018-07-10T15:33:20+00:00

Depending on your place of birth, your care provider and/or the anesthesiologist, and your choice, a Doula can support you in the operating room during your Cesarean birth. If for whatever reason the Doula is not able to be in the operating room, they are still able to support you in the hospital after you have given birth. At Mama Tierra Birthing we give love to everyone, but we give a little extra love to those who give birth via Cesarean. It can be very challenging healing from major abdominal surgery and caring for a newborn baby.

What does a Certificated Lactation Educator Counselor do?2018-07-10T15:37:51+00:00

A CLEC can teach breastfeeding classes, and serve families as a guide throughout their breastfeeding journeys. A CLEC can help you find the best position for you and your baby during feedings, guide you in making sure the baby has a deep latch, and any other basic breastfeeding techniques. If you have a pump and not sure how to use it, a CLEC can teach you how. If any complications shall arise that is beyond the CLEC’s scope of practice, they can refer you to a Lactation Consultant and provide you with any resources you may need. At Mama Tierra Birthing, CLEC services are provided in the Postpartum Doula package.

This is my first baby, I don’t know what to expect once the baby arrives and we are home.2018-07-10T15:36:29+00:00

Not to worry! As Postpartum Doulas, we meet with you before your baby arrives to go over your postpartum plan. We talk about your goals, basic baby 101 care, your feeding plan, parents’ self care plan, and how a Doula can be of service during your postpartum journey.

My partner will support me at my birth, why would I need a Doula?2018-07-06T03:11:39+00:00

A Doula does not take over your partner’s role in your birth. Instead, a Doula and your partner work together as a team. While most of the energy is focused on the birthing person and the baby, a Doula can also support your partner in many ways.

I’ve experienced childbirth before, would a Doula still be beneficial?2018-07-10T15:28:39+00:00

Absolutely! Whether this is your 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th, 5th child, a Doula can always be of help. Just like every person is different, every childbirth can be very different. Having continuous birth support is essential.

Is the breastfeeding class apart of the Postpartum Doula package?2018-07-10T15:38:55+00:00

Do you support parents that aren’t breastfeeding (by choice or not)?2018-07-10T15:39:28+00:00

Yes! Whether you physically aren’t able to breastfeed or just flat out don’t want to breastfeed, our Postpartum Doulas are here for you to provide bottle feeding support.

Do you provide overnight support?2018-07-10T15:37:15+00:00

We do not provide overnight Postpartum Doula support. However, with the education we provide families during the day and with our Infant Sleep Education services, we are able to guide parents on how to best get a restful night of sleep with a newborn baby. If you are still wishing to have overnight support, we are happy to refer you to other Doulas or night nannies who provide the service.

Can a Doula be helpful even though I’m having a medicated birth?2018-07-10T15:33:43+00:00

Yes! Choosing to have an epidural doesn’t mean a Doula won’t be necessary. Assisting with position changes for optimal fetal positioning, nourishing the birthing person and their partner, emotional support, creating the parents’ ideal birth environment, and advocating for the family, are all things the Doula can still do (and so much more).

Are Doulas only for people who are having a home birth?2018-07-10T15:33:57+00:00

Nope! Without judgment, we provide our Doula services to families at the hospital, at a birthing center, or at home.
